What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen is unique in the field of bodywork. The relatively few, gentle "moves" over muscle and soft tissue, address the whole body, stimulating it to reset and heal itself. The healing may occur at all levels as needed: physical, chemical, emotional, mental, energetic, etc.

A Bowen session consists of several gentle moves through light-weight clothing (or on skin). In a Bowen office or clinic, the client usually lies on a bed or bodywork/massage table or, for comfort, may sit in a chair. However, Bowen can be done anywhere -- on the sports field, in a hospital room, at the site of an accident, on an airplane or train.

A session may last from fifteen minutes to an hour. Most often, surprisingly few sessions are needed to alleviate complaints, whether structural or functional, even if long-standing. And the results hold for a long time, generally until there is a re-injury.

Bowen is completely safe and appropriate for everyone from newborns to the elderly. Highly trained athletes and pregnant women benefit equally, each according to need. Although there are three circumstances in which a specific series of moves, is contraindicated, there are no limits for a Bowtech session, as other parts of the body and the body as a whole will still benefit.

Limitations:

There are no limitations that would keep any one person from receiving a Bowen session. Bowen is safe and beneficial to everyone immediately after birth.

There are, however, a few procedures that are contraindicated in specific circumstances. I have been trained to ask the necessary precautionary questions prior to beginning therapy and will avoid the limited procedures that are not appropriate.

What is the Detoxification Reaction?

Bowen encourages proper functioning of all body systems, including those responsible for eliminating toxins.

If your body has stored unnecessary materials, you may experience one or several of these detoxification reactions for a day or two after a Bowen session.

  • Aching muscles
  • Mild nausea
  • Mild headache
  • Changes in sensation of temperature
  • Minor changes in elimination

Your body will function more effectively when the toxins have been released. During the detoxification, the best way to minimize discomfort is stimulate the lymphatic system to increase the elimination of toxins. You can do this by:

  • Increase your water intake.
  • Walking 30 minutes each day in fresh air.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Wait 5-10 days before any other Bodywork.
